DIY Cricket Bat for VR Controller, DIY VR Cricket Bat Project, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, VR Cricket Game.
Have you ever chased that perfect immersive experience in gaming? One of my colleagues Max (his nickname), once a key member of an international cricket club in Europe, knows exactly what I’m talking about. A passionate cricketer and VR enthusiast, he recently upgraded from his Meta Quest 2 to Meta Quest 3 VR headset.
He really likes to play cricket whenever he gets free time. After buying his new headset, he found a very immersive and real-life VR cricket game online without wasting any time he downloaded it and was enjoying cricket again in his basement (his wife’s orders!). Yes, in the basement because his wife does not allow him to use the VR headset in the living room, she was afraid that he might break stuff while enjoying his VR headset without realising his surroundings.
While the enhanced visuals and performance were impressive, they didn’t quite hit the mark for him when it came to playing VR cricket games. Something was missing—the feeling of a real cricket bat.

What is a VR Cricket Game?
Cricket is almost the same sport as baseball. While both cricket and baseball involve hitting a ball and scoring runs, they have distinct personalities. Cricket features a flat-batted batsman (batter) facing a bowler (pitcher) on a cricket pitch. Runs are scored by hitting the ball and running between wickets (wooden posts) or by boundaries.
In contrast, baseball takes place on a diamond-shaped field with a round-batted batter facing a pitcher. Here, runs are earned by hitting the ball and circling fixed bases. Cricket has longer innings with teams batting for extended periods, while baseball features shorter innings with a focus on individual at-bats. Both games require strategic batting and fielding, but cricket boasts a deeper set of rules and variations compared to its American cousin.
Now we learned about cricket, A VR cricket game is an immersive gaming experience that allows players to step onto a virtual cricket field. Using VR headsets and controllers, players can bat, and bowl simulating the real-life sensations of playing cricket. The technology provides a realistic environment, complete with detailed graphics and lifelike physics, making it a popular choice among cricket fans and gamers alike. When did it all start?
Earlier, Max was using the regular VR controller to play the VR cricket game for hitting the ball. But it was not the same fun of using a real-life cricket bat and he was searching for something to improve his experience. It all began with a spark of creativity. One day, while he was going through his basement, he stumbled upon an old cricket bat. An idea struck him like a well-timed shot to the boundary. What if he could merge his love for cricket with his passion for VR? He decided to repurpose the old bat as a VR controller.
He cut the bat in half, keeping the handle section intact. Next, he carefully created a hole in this section of the bat to fit the VR controller using whatever tools and things he had available at home. In the above image, you can see the bat is not perfect, the finishing of the bat is not that much impressive. The process was meticulous but straightforward. Once the controller was securely fitted, he calibrated this improvised cricket bat with his VR headset. Just like that, he was back to enjoying VR cricket in his basement, but this time with a twist.
The Importance of Weight
However, again while playing his VR cricket game, one crucial element was missing – the weight. A real cricket bat weighs around 1.5kg (3.30 pounds), contributing significantly to the overall experience. Cutting the bat had reduced its weight, and while the initial feeling was promising, something felt off. After a few sessions, he realized the lack of weight was impacting his game.
Determined to find a solution, Max decided to add extra weight. Using gym weights, he added an additional 500gm (1,10 pounds) to the handle section. After recalibrating the bat, the difference was noticeable immediately. The additional weight brought back the familiar heft of a real cricket bat, making the VR experience more realistic and enjoyable.
Finding Satisfaction in VR Cricket
The end result? Bat is not perfect to look at but pure satisfaction. Max finally felt like he was playing cricket again, not just in VR but with the true sensation of holding a cricket bat. The added weight made all the difference, making every shot and swing feel more authentic. His creative solution had paid off, enhancing his VR cricket experience beyond his initial expectations.
Why DIY Cricket Bat for VR Controller?
Earlier, Max was searching online if there was any available VR controller specifically for playing cricket and to his surprise he found some 3D-printed bats which are calibrated with VR headsets and had everything he was looking for. However, those bats were too pricey because of the very niche market, the shipment adds lots of costs to it. It was not like he could not afford it but the shipment time also killed his interest to buy them. Hence, he went ahead with his DIY VR cricket bat project.
Summarizing his journey, this DIY project not only aroused again his passion for cricket but also showcased several benefits:
- Affordability: Repurposing an old cricket bat is far more cost-effective than purchasing specialized VR accessories.
- Personalization: Customizing the bat to his preferences ensured a unique and personalized gaming experience.
- Satisfaction: The end result brought immense satisfaction, proving that sometimes, the best solutions come from thinking outside the box.
